BVRC Announces New Program for Newcomers: Ham Radio Jump Start Saturday

BVRC is announcing a new program for newcomers: Ham Radio Jump Start Saturday.

For anyone newly licensed in the world of amateur radio, the initial excitement of passing the exam can quickly turn into a wave of feeling technically overwhelmed. You have the call sign, but looking at a radio dashboard full of complex menus, article after article on the “best” antenna, and bundles of coaxial cable can make the hobby feel incredibly intimidating.

Recognizing that the learning curve can be steep, in addition to our three great options that newcomers to the club can avail themselves to — HAM 101 weekly net, HAM 101 monthly workshop, and Elmer 911 help tab on the club website — BVRC is launching a new initiative designed to bridge the gap between passing the test and getting on the air.

As the largest and most active amateur radio club in Arkansas, BVRC has turned the daunting transition from “book-smart technician” to “active operator” into a hands-on, high-energy community gathering for newcomers.

Held every fourth Saturday of the month, Ham Radio Jump Start Saturdays are designed specifically for newcomer hams who thrive in a personalized, one-on-one learning environment. Instead of a formal lecture or a rigid classroom setting, the event operates as an interactive, hands-on laboratory driven entirely by the questions and needs of the attendees.

For all our newcomers and/or our newer members who have only been licensed a few years, this is your opportunity to visit with an Elmer one-on-one, and bring your questions, your problems, and, if needed, your actual equipment. Whether you have a pocket-sized handheld transceiver (HT), a mobile rig destined for vehicle or home use, or a complex High Frequency (HF) transceiver still sitting in its factory box, the club’s Elmers are ready to help. The sessions are designed to assist beginners across a wide spectrum of topics.

Whether you want to solve a specific programming issue, figure out an antenna problem, discuss what type of radio is best for you, or simply sit down with a cup of coffee and talk shop with an expert, Ham Radio Jump Start Saturdays are your open invitation to take the next step in your amateur radio journey.

A feature article on this new club event will appear in the next issue of The Signal with full information on this new program, but for now, be advised that Ham Radio Jump Start Saturdays begin this month! Mark your calendar and come join us! No registration is needed. We’ll have the coffee ready.
