General Class Instruction

BVRC Webmaster and Trustee Glenn Kilpatrick, WB5L has announced that a new General license class has been scheduled! Glenn will be the instructor for the class. Following along the footsteps of Tom Northfell, W5XNA’s very successful Technician Class, Glenn will also be using the Gordon West, WB6NOA books.

Your Ticket to Worldwide Communication!

Move up to the worldwide ham bands! General Class contains everything you need to upgrade to the high-frequency amateur radio license. The General class license is your ticket to worldwide voice communications, as well as other forms of ham radio emissions, including data, FT8, CW, and slow-scan TV. With a General class license you can talk around the world.

ARRL  The National Association for Amateur Radio® has become the new publisher of the Amateur Radio License Preparation books and related resources authored by Gordon West, WB6NOA. ARRL Education and Learning Manager Steve Goodgame, K5ATA, has also announced that Gordon West, WB6NOA has been named ARRL National Instructor.

CLASS DURATION:

9:00 am – 3:30 pm each day with the General test session at 3:30pm Sunday July 21st.

Each day we will have 15 minute breaks at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., plus a 30 minute lunch at 12:00 – 12:30 p.m. Bring your lunch! You will not have time to leave for lunch.

General Class Guidelines

This condensed General License class requires study at home. You will need to obtain the Gordon West General Class book by July 1st, in order to pre-study for this course. The cut off date for registration is July 1st, or 25 people, whichever comes first. We will be sending out pre-study materials before July 1st and you will need to have your book. You can order the book from various places, ARRL, Amazon, Main Trading, etc.

    This new 11th Edition of General Class includes all 430 multiple-choice questions and answers exactly as they will appear on your written exam.

    Saturday and Sunday July 13th/14th

    Chapter 1 gives an overview of all the exciting HF frequency privileges you will earn with your upgrade.
    Chapter 2 gives you a little ham history refresher and updates you on all the current ham radio licenses.
    Chapter 3 includes every Element 3 question and answer in the FCC question pool effective July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2027. Up to CD-3, Track-3.

    Saturday and Sunday July 20th/21st

    Chapter 3 includes every Element 3 question and answer in the FCC question pool effective July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2027. CD-3 Track-3 to CD-4 Track-5
    Chapter 4 tells you what to expect on exam day, how to find an exam site, and FCC actions to streamline your applications.
    Chapter 5 tells you how to learn Morse code at 5-wpm. We continue to include this chapter because learning Morse code will enhance your operating experience on the General bands.

    Use this book with ARRL Exam for Ham Radio online to review the material. You can even take practice exams so there are no surprises on exam day!

    The BVRC VE team will be on-hand for you to pass your General Class test at 3:30 p.m. July 21st, 2024.
